This mass bone bed was incredible! So many dinosaurs from multiple species found here! From small, fleet-footed ornithopods to spiky, flamboyant stegosaurs to towering, long-necked sauropods. And, of course, 67-75% Allosaurus. And the section shown here is only a small fraction of the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, which itself is only a small part of the entire Morrison Formation.
According to the tour guide, dinosaur bones and sediment deposits were found in multiple alternating layers. This stratigraphy indicates an ephemeral (seasonal) pond environment, and subsequently seasonal occurrences of dinosaurs dying here. Dinosaurs were even treading on each other’s bones, as evidenced by some (but not all) bones showing signs of being crushed after death, including the leg of a young Allosaurus.
