Mastodon americanus (Zdenek Burian)

The American mastodon, Mastodon americanus, was about 3 1/2 m (12 feet long) and unlike its European cousins, was covered in hair. Evolving during the Miocene (23-5 million years ago), mastodons spread into America during the end of that epoch. Mastodon americanus died out during the Pleistocene (2,580,000 to 11,700 years ago).
Painting by Zdenek Burian from the book “Life Before Man,” 1995.
