The capital of the Roman Empire was once embellished with many bronze statues of emperors and other notable dignitaries. Most were melted down during the Middle Ages. One of the few to survive is this magnificent equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. Made entirely of bronze, it stands 4.24 meters (14 feet) tall. It was dedicated in 175 A.D. Its original location may have been in the Forum Romanum, however it has been moved several times over the centuries. The original is now on exhibit in the Capitoline Museums and a replica has been placed in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Roma.
